A newscast aired this morning containing some inaccuracies around the law enforcement responsibilities of the Department of Liquor and Lottery (DLL) and the Cannabis Control Board. The newscast stated that one of the new responsibilities of DLL would be the enforcement of rules in Vermont’s recreational cannabis market. This is not accurate.
The Cannabis Control Board has enforcement authority of its rules under state law (7 VSA § 843). Last week, Governor Scott released an updated public safety plan. That plan stated that the Department of Liquor and Lottery may be called upon by the Cannabis Control Board for law enforcement support, should the Board deem it necessary.
As of the end of July, the Cannabis Control Board has fully staffed its own independent compliance division. Our agents have begun the process of meeting with current and prospective licensees for compliance assistance.
Should additional law enforcement support become necessary in enforcing the Board’s rules, the Board will rely on DLL on a case-by-case basis.
